Description

Lithium-Ion Alternator Controller

A Tecnium *LI* lithium-ion alternator regulator is always a good choice. Tecnium regulators use modern MOSFET technology, which allows them to be used with even the latest lithium-ion batteries.

Suitable for the following battery types:
  • all lead-acid batteries (conventional, AGM/micro-mat, gel)
  • Lithium-ion batteries
Good to know:
  • Alternator regulators work closely with your motorbike’s alternator. They convert AC voltage to DC voltage and supply power to the vehicle’s electrical system. They “regulate” the system to ensure that all electrical components receive enough power to function properly.
  • Any excess voltage is used to repeatedly recharge the vehicle battery. However, this also causes wear and tear on the regulator.
  • It’s hardly noticeable—and usually only becomes apparent when it’s too late—that after many years and thousands of kilometers, the regulator completely stops working.
  • Therefore, you should regularly check your regulator’s performance and replace it if it malfunctions.
  • If the regulator malfunctions, the motorcycle battery may not receive enough charging current and could discharge.
  • But overcharging is also possible: This is particularly disastrous when switching to Li-ion batteries, as it destroys them in no time.

Information on switching from lead-acid to Li-ion batteries:
  • Switching from a conventional starter battery (lead-acid battery) to a lithium battery is generally feasible on nearly all motorbikes
  • If the conversion does not cause any problems or limitations, no action is required
  • Note the motorbike’s model year—was it shipped from the factory with a lead-acid battery? Many older motorbikes have alternator regulators that either fail to fully charge lithium batteries or deliver excessively high charging currents.
  • This is also due to normal wear and tear on the regulators over the years. Both factors can lead to significantly reduced runtime of the lithium-ion batteries, ranging from defects to total failure
  • Check the function and performance of your motorbike’s charging regulator before converting to a lithium-ion battery
  • Ideally, use a voltmeter connected to the battery terminals to measure how high the charging voltage rises when you increase the idle speed. The charging voltage should remain below 14.6 volts
  • If in doubt—or just to be on the safe side—replace the old regulator immediately with a Carmo Li-Ion alternator regulator
