Your breathable footwear is windproof and waterproof. However, it is only breathable if you wear functional socks. While cotton socks store moisture, functional socks transport sweat and moisture away from the foot and into the shoe. The breathable shoe membrane then gets to work and transports the moisture completely out of the shoe. This ensures breathability.
